KMTALK recently managed to get hold of renowned KM practitioners Patrick Lambe and Edgar Tan from the Straits Knowledge, Singapore. During the enlightening interview Patrick spoke about the development of KM in Asian region as compared to the West. According to Patrick, Asia is more serious in doing KM than the West. Edgar and Patrick also spoke about the worst practices in KM that they have encountered so far as consultants. Question was asked about the traits of a KM practioners, where Patrick mentioned, Knowledge managers themselves do not share much and it’s the time that they should change such attitudes. Other than Patrick, Edgar and myself we also had Hayati from PETRONAS participated in the conversation.

Innovation is a somewhat overlooked dimension in knowledge management, but it’s really the core of what all our efforts in KM should be about, says Waltraut Ritter, Research director at Knowledge Enterprises over Teh Tarik in her very short stop-over in Kuala Lumpur. It was the second time I met her in KL and our 2-hr long knowledge sharing was definitely a good experience for me.
Waltraut is visiting faculty member in a new university programme called I-schools at International School of Information Management, University of Mysore, India. I-schools or Information Schools are a collaborate project of a group of 19 I-schools in the United States and Canada (e.g. University of California, Berkeley; Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, Syracuse University).

David Gurteen is definitely one the friendliest KMers I have met so far. He is funny, lively and shares a lot from his experiences. In his short visit to KL, he not only gave lecture to a university but also met 5 of us for a 4-hr long Saturday evening (11 August) talk at Starbucks. Those who didn’t come, I have only one thing to say- you missed the evening!
David developed his Gurteen Knowledge site in late 90’s (1999). When asked what inspired him to create that site, he said, “I always wanted to have a site and was collecting 2/3 databases of people’s information. Then I thought why not create a web space where I can park all these info and some people will find it useful. So, I developed it in early 1999 using Lotus applications”.

My experience from a short stint in the USA, during my PhD work suggests that the main issues with sucessfull implementation of KM initiaves are:
1. Difficulty in quantifying the value of KM and KM (systems) investment.
2. The lack of a knowledge sharing culture both intra and inter-organizations.
3. The What's in for me" syndrome - weak blending of KM initiatives to that of the benfits schemes
4. What- KM? What on earth is that? Awareness and mis-conception of the KM notion.
