Knowledge Management- 'Policy' or 'No Policy'?

Does an organization really need to have a set of Policies to implement and institutionalize knowledge management? - Or Knowledge management can be enforced without any ‘stick & carrot’ policy?

As KM involves management of both tangible and intangible assets, how far a written policy can influence its practices is still a concern. According to David Skyrme, “A 'Policy' sounds prescriptive, which is generally the last thing one should develop to create a knowledge sharing culture”.

According to Mr. Lakshman Pillai, during 'Future Trends and Development of Knowledge Management' evening talk, sometimes it is better to know 'who' than know 'how’. But just for a point to ponder, how long can one survive throughout his or her career life just by depending on others?

The talk was held on 7 Dec 2006 at the Open University, KL Learning center. Around 50 participants joined in the talk, which was organized by Malaysian National Computer Confederation (MNCC).

Have you heard of the funky colorful ‘Dilbert Cubicle’ that allows staff to have a hammock, an aquarium, a hamster wheel to create a workstation based on his or her tastes and lifestyle or the ‘Shopping Cart’ for all, which considers issues such as maneuverability, shopping behavior, child safety, and maintenance cost? – If you haven’t, then let me tell you, these are some new products developed by IDEO and the people who helped in designing such sophisticated designs are the Ethnographers, the Human Factors specialists.

Or too much flexibility leads to misuse of facilities? How to inculcate knowledge sharing in the workplace, where the socio-cultural backgrounds of people are not open to sharing and participating?
