The effectiveness of your communication is the response you get. It's an easy mantra to remember, but often overwhelmingly difficult to implement. It puts the responsibility for your communications on you, rather than on the incompetence, stupidity or stubbornness of the person you're trying to communicate with. More optimistically, it implies that you can improve your communications, because you are responsible for their effectiveness.
